Carsharing will emerge as a billion euro market by 2021

bcg

The number of carsharing users will increase sixfold by 2021 to reach 35 million users with a turnover of 4.7 billion euro annually as the consulting “Boston Consulting Group" found out.

2015 the Carsharing market involved 85.000 cars with 5,8 million users and a turnover of 650 million euro worldwide. 50% of the cars are based in Germany serving one million users. In 2021 the users will have doubled in Germany, but sixfolded worldwide.

Carsharing pays off for its members
Carsharing already pays off for users of city cars in Europe when they drive less than 7,500 kilometers per year. Owners of

compact cars could waive their own cars when they drive less than 12,500 kilometers per year. Midsize cars would be superfluous when their owners travel less than 16,000 kilometers per year.

No threat to the car industry
However, a serious threat to the sale of new cars is not seen by the BCG experts. They estimate that the market for new cars, even if there is carsharing, rises at about 78.4 million cars by 2021. Only about 792,000 vehicles would not be bought any more. In Europe, according to the calculations there will be 278,000 customers renouncing a new car. This corresponds to
approximately 1.3 percent of the estimated sales market in Europe.
The study assumes that the collaborative car uses leads to a sales decline of 550,000 cars and a loss of revenue of € 7.4 billion worldwide in 2021. It is estimated that the highest turnover will be made with users who only need the car occasionally.

Europe is expected to produce the highest carsharing sales in 2021, followed by Asia and the Pacific region and North America.
